Why Does Islam Prohibit Drinking Alcohol?

By Editorial Staff

Why does Islam prohibit a Muslim to drink alcohol?

Allah says in the Qur’an:

O you who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination – of Satan’s handiwork;  eschew such (abomination), that you may prosper. (Al-Ma’idah 5:90)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Alcohol is the mother of all evils and it is the most shameful of evils.” (Ibn-I-Majah)

But is Islam the only religion that prohibits drinking alcohol? What do other scriptures say about that? Is there a mention in the Bible, for example, about this?

And why is alcohol prohibited in the first place?

Isn’t alcoholic initially a social drinker? And if one has self-control and never gets intoxicated, why cannot they drink?

Can a drunk person show a lot of self-control and behave well?
